The roster for this year’s Austin City Limits Music Festival, which takes place Oct. 7-9 and 14-16 in Texas’ Zilker Park, was released on Tuesday, and it’s another wonderful year for fans of female talent.
Despitethe fact that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are at the top of the list, five of the top eight performers are female-fronted. P!nk, the pop superstar, will perform at ACL Fest for the first time.
This year’s lineup includes Grammy-winning R&B singer SZA and former Austinite/country music sensation Kacey Musgraves. The Chicks, a Texas country band, and Paramore, an alt-rock band, are also headlining, with America’s favorite gay cowboy/boundary-pushing rapper Lil Nas X and electronic artist Flume rounding out the lineup.
Jasmine’ Sullivan, the singer of “Heaux Tales,” Carly Rae Jepsen, Japanese Breakfast, and British singer-songwriter Arlo Parks are among the other powerful women on the program. (This spring, both Japanese Breakfast and Arlo Parks taped episodes of “Austin City Limits.”)
The ladies aren’t the only ones who matter. Diplo, Zhu, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, Billy Strings, and British forest spirit/electronic genius James Blake are among the headliners, along with Texas rapper Toby Nwigwe, Philly rock outfit The War on Drugs, and Texas-bred pop star Conan Gray.
Some musicians will only be performing at ACL Fest for one weekend.
More noteworthy acts include: Weekend 1 will feature South by Southwest breakouts/”Silk Chiffon” band MUNA, hyperpop darling Slayyyter, and pop sister act Aly & AJ. Weekend 2 will feature Phoenix, a French pop-rock band, Yungblud, emo favorites The Front Bottoms, buzzy Brits Wet Leg, and inventive hip-hop star Princess Nokia. Sofi Tukker, Miley Cyrus’ sister Noah Cyrus, and indie-pop newcomers Magdalena Bay are also on the bill for both weekends.
This year’s program is notably weak on hip-hop, reversing a recent trend. Bia is on the bill, and Lil Durk performs on Weekend 1, but you’ll have to look hard to find rap this year.
While there isn’t as much Latinx representation on this program as we’d like, prominent acts include R&B crooner Omar Apollo, Cuban funk star Cimafunk (Weekend 1), French-Cuban sister duet Ibeyi (Weekend 2), Miami-based R&B singer Sabrina Claudio, and Los Angeles pop band the Maras.
Pop sensation Harry Styles, who revealed last week that he will play five gigs at the Moody Center over an eight-night period from Sept. 25 to Oct. 2, only a few days before ACL Fest, was one of the festival’s most anticipated additions. Along with New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Toronto, Austin was one of five cities picked for multi-night engagements on his North American tour.

Will Austin Kiddie Limits play ACL Fest again?
Yes, in a nutshell. Last year, the festival’s children’s area was closed due to pandemic-related fears during ACL Fest. It’ll be back in 2022, with information on musical performances and other activities to follow soon.
The catch: Previously, ACL Fest was free for children aged 10 and under, but that will no longer be the case this year. Children under the age of eight will be admitted free in 2022 when accompanied by a ticketed adult.
