Who Is Dua Lipa?
Dua Lipa is the daughter of Kosovar Albanians who fled to London as refugees in the 1990s. In Albanian, her name “Dua” means “love,” and she has no middle name. Lipa was so determined to pursue a career in music that she moved to London on her own at the age of 15. (She and her family had moved back to Kosovo a few years before.) Before signing with a label, she used social media to advertise herself. Lipa’s first songs was described as “dark pop,” but her second album, Future Nostalgia, was more upbeat. Elton John, Miley Cyrus, and Chris Martin are among the musicians with whom Lipa has collaborated.
Early Life and Family
Dua Lipa was born on August 22, 1995, in London, England. Lipa’s parents, Dukagjin and Anessa, departed Pristina, Kosovo, in 1992 to flee the former Yugoslavia’s violence. They were targeted by Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic because they were Kosovar Albanians.
Lipa’s parents were refugees who came in London. They both worked in restaurants to make ends meet in their new residence, despite the fact that they were both students (Lipa’s father studied dentistry and her mother studied law). Lipa was born in 1995.
Lipa wrote her first song when she was four years old. Her father had been in a rock band in addition to his dental studies, so she had a family tie to music. “Because my father was a musician and music was always played in the house, it just kind of grew up with me.” had a big impact on me,” she shared in one interview. She grew up listening to artists like Blondie, Prince, Bob Dylan, Sting and Pink.
Lipa’s parents decided to return to their homeland in 2006 because they felt it was secure. Lipa, an 11-year-old girl, and her younger siblings, Rina and Gjin, were returned to Kosovo.
Despite the fact that Lipa had grown up speaking Albanian at home, the move indicated that her language abilities were insufficient to succeed in school. Her Albanian did improve over time. She made pals who told her about the war in Kosovo that had erupted while her family was in London. Lipa was also introduced to new music through Kosovo’s hip-hop-dominated music scene.

Lipa returned to London at the age of 15 and moved in with a family acquaintance. She was able to persuade her parents to agree to the transfer because it would be beneficial to her education. Her main ambition, however, was to pursue singing; she believed that starting a career in music would be impossible in Kosovo. In 2020, she revealed to CBS News, “I was thinking about herself, “I want to do music, but on a worldwide scale.” I need to return to the center of the action.”
Dua Lipa grew raised in the London neighborhood of West Hampstead. Her cello lessons were part of her music classes at Fitzjohn’s Primary School.
