After performing on stage alongside New York University’s class of 2022, Taylor Swift’s famous song “22” takes on a whole new significance.

The Grammy-winning singer and composer got an honoris causa Doctor of Fine Arts from the Manhattan-based university on Wednesday, and delivered the commencement speech with a joke.

“The main reason I’m here is because I have a song called ’22,'” she added, thanking the university, congratulating the graduates, and thanking her parents.
The ceremony at Yankee Stadium was dubbed “an unusual ‘doubleheader,'” since it honored both this year’s graduating class and students from the 2020 and 2021 classes whose ceremonies had been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Hello, my name is Taylor Swift,” she began her commencement speech. “I was dancing in heels and a glittery leotard the last time I was in a stadium this huge. This attire is a lot more relaxed.”

During the commencement ceremony for the class of 2022 at New York University, singer Taylor Swift waves to the graduating students.

Swift walked into the stadium with the rest of the students, donning doctoral regalia and a red lip, waving to audience members and throwing up peace signs before taking her place with the rest of the commencement’s platform party.

Taylor Swift will receive an honorary degree from New York University and deliver a commencement speech in May.

The singer spoke to the class of 2022 on behalf of several honorary degree recipients, including Judith Heumann, a long-time disability rights campaigner who was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

Swift’s honorary degree has been a long time coming, and she first stated her desire for one in a 2016 interview with Vogue, when she said that her musician pal Ed Sheeran had received one from the University Campus Suffolk in England.

She remarked at the time, “I feel like he looks down on me because I don’t have one.”

Her degree, however, is now complete.

Swift, who dropped out of school after 10th grade and relied on homeschooling for the remainder of her education, said, “I’d want to thank NYU for making me, officially, on paper at least, a doctor.”

“This is not the type of doctor you want around in an emergency.” Unless you had a special situation in which you needed to hear a song with a compelling hook.”

Swift, who has an NYU course dedicated to examining the singe yar’s rhyme and reason taught by Rolling Stone’s Brittany Spanos, followed her address by providing her audience “life hacks,” recognizing that hacks are different from delivering “unsolicited counsel.” Swift recommended adopting a “catch and release” mentality, embracing the concept of “cringe,” and “never be ashamed of trying.”

Swift explained that growing up in the music industry meant that she was constantly receiving advice from individuals who wanted to help her live the life of a pop star. Her adviser’s mindset was based on the assumption that “mistakes mean failure,” but she later discovered that her mistakes were the “greatest things” in her life.

Swift said, “Getting canceled on the internet and nearly losing my job gave me tremendous knowledge of all varieties of wine.”

Swift ended her statement with encouraging comments, citing her new degree as proof of her credentials.

“Things will happen to us that we will recover from and learn from. As a result, we will become more resilient “Swift explained. “As long as we have the opportunity to breathe, we will breathe in, breathe through, breathe deeply, and breathe out – I’m a doctor now, so I understand how breathing works.”
