With only a few seconds left in the UFC 278 main event, Leon Edwards emerged victorious as the new welterweight title.
The challenger made a quick move in the opening round, knocking Usman to the ground, landing in mount, switching to the back, and then spending the final minute looking for a choke and displaying his competitiveness. Usman held the upper hand for the following three and a half rounds.
Edwards failed to hit blows with force and readily gave up takedowns as Usman’s pressure, pace, and experience in title fights increased with each round.
Early in the fourth round, the challenger managed to secure a waist lock and try to sink his hooks, but Usman quickly broke free and immediately put Edwards on the ground.
He continued to grind on Edwards before letting loose with his hands just before the round came to a close.

In the fifth and final round, Usman continued to apply pressure until the fight was stopped by a low blow with little under two minutes left.
“Rocky” unleashed a left high kick that hit flush and promptly extinguished Usman’s lights after the restart when Edwards had a little bounce in his step and Usman was standing in range.
Usman sat on the stool and pondered what went wrong while Edwards celebrated until the emotion overcame him.
Since Usman had such a long lead and had the most of the fight under control, the rivals will probably have to square off again, but Edwards will be entering the rematch wearing the gold medal around his waist.
